The observant (and kindly avid) readers among you may have noticed that I’ve published 9 times in the past 11 days. A tad different to my previous publishing schedule, let’s just say…
The reason is simple: I realised that no-one was coming to rescue me.
Since I was a child, I’ve had big goals and grand ambitions, but since I started my career, I’ve subconsciously or consciously always found a way to procrastinate making those goals and ambitions a reality. Why? Because it was safer to do so.
Throughout my career so far, I’ve identified a pattern of “jumping on bandwagons”. Rather than building from scratch or backing my own ideas, I’d stumble across a great idea someone else had and support them endlessly to make it happen. This meant that everyday, I could retreat to my cocoon of comfort, safe in the knowledge that no-one would ever judge or hate anything I put out into the world. Because my name wasn’t on it, even though it should have been. And, as my conscious self told me, even though I wanted it to be.
But unfortunately for my conscious self, my subconscious disagreed. My subconscious wasn’t ready to face failure. So I continued sacrificing my own ambition for the opportunity to build someone else’s dream.
Unrealised ambition is one of the greatest sources of untapped value in the world. Trying to unlock this value is one of the reasons I work in education. But in order to do that successfully, one first needs to unlock it in themselves.
So exactly 9 days ago, I made a pledge to myself (and only myself). Rather than getting a dopamine high from telling others about my new goal, making me feel like I’d already achieved it, I decided to keep this one to myself. There was no getting out of doing the work. It just had to be done.
This is a short post to (1) thank you for gifting me a sliver of space in your inbox as I carry out my pledge to myself and (2) serve as a reminder that no-is coming to rescue you.
There is a time and a place to jump on someone’s bandwagon. Choose infrequently and choose wisely. But there is also a time and a place to jump on your own bandwagon. If you have a dream, you need to do the work to make it happen.
Go for it, no-one’s watching.
"There is no getting out of doing the work. It just had to be done."
