#003: Exposing the Invisible Rules that govern our minds and bodies
Come inside to contribute to an exciting new project...
Read time: 2m 26s
Hola! I have something very exciting to share with you this week…but first, a fun realisation. I’m going on holiday for THREE weeks (hold onto your hats!) and the reactions to me taking this much time off have made me realise (yet again) how much of a work-centric culture we live in. It seems there’s an invisible rule that you should never take more than two weeks off in one go. But why, I cry!
I find that to truly unwind, immerse myself in a different headspace and uncover new seeds of inspiration, that’s exactly what I need to do. I’m planning to spend three weeks doing nothing but reading, writing, seeking inspiration and finding peace. Any book recommendations (I’m currently on an anthropological sci-fi binge), please send them my way. Onwards.
A window into my brain
This week, I’m choosing to share just one piece that I would love for you to read and give me some feedback on (just hit reply or vote in the poll below)!
TL;DR I’m starting a podcast on the topic of Invisible Rules and would love to know if this concept resonates and which rules you’d love to untangle with me.
Exposing the Invisible Rules that govern us: an exposition of 5 of the most common unspoken mental, cultural and structural agreements that govern our individual and collective behaviour.
Sentences I wish I’d written
"When a woman finally learns that pleasing the world is impossible, she becomes free to learn how to please herself."
Glennon Doyle, untamed
“In the margins of books, in the margins of life as commonly conceived by our culture’s inherited parameters of permission and possibility, I have worked out and continue working out who I am and who I wish to be — a private inquiry irradiated by the ultimate question, the great quickening of thought, feeling, and wonder that binds us all: What is all this?”
Maria Popova, The Marginalian
“If I drop this phone a thousand times, a million times... and one time, it does't fall... just once, it hovers in the air. That is an error that's worth looking at.”
Karen, I Origins (AKA one of my top three favourite movies)
From idea to reality
I had a revelation this week that I was spending more time building other people’s dreams than I was building my own. Invisible Rules is an idea that has lived rent-free in my head for months: as a podcast, as a book, as a promising detox to our blue-pilled state of existence (not to be overly dramatic). Yet, it wasn’t until today that I chose to do something about it. This week, I challenge you to dedicate one hour every day to doing something that builds towards your dreams, rather than the dreams of others. You don’t have to be an entrepreneur, a creator, a musician or a poet to do this. I guarantee that the simple act of dedicating 1/24th of your day to your dreams–whatever that looks like for you–will radically shift how you conceive of what’s possible.
A question for you
What invisible rules are governing your behaviour?
Thanks for reading and welcome to Spring!
